RESPONSIBILITIES OF BUILDING SAFETY OFFICER

1. Preceding each pick-up, the Building (Departmental or College as is applicable) BIOHAZARDOUS Safety Officer will inspect the waste collection site to assure that it is in readiness for waste pick-up.

a. The site must be clear of hazards or spills.

b. All sharps containers must be securely closed.

2. The safety officer will inspect all sharps containers for proper tagging or labeling and assure that all Biohazardous Waste Forms have been properly filled out.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF PERSONNEL PERFORMING WASTE PICK UP

Personel performing BIOHAZARDOUS waste pick-up services must be vigilent to protect themselves against exporure to infectious agents. The minimal precautions to be observed include the following:

1. Visually inspect the inspection site to be sure that there are no leaks from the collection bin or individual closed containers (sharps). No pick up must be carried if it is unsafe to do so.

2. Remove waste forms for submission to Hospital Environmental Safety Services.

3. Put on disposable latex (or alternate approved protective waterproof ) gloves and load bin and containers for transport.

4. Seek medical attention as described above if exposure to an infectious agent occurs or is suspected to have occurred.

AUTOCLAVE TESTING PROGRAM

An autoclave testing program must be routinely administered according to the manufacturer >s recommendations. Such tests may consist of culture, tape color change or other recommended procedure. Autoclave testing, repair and use records must be properly maintained. Autoclaves designated for decontamination are required to undergo annual testing by Environmental Services designated personnel.

MEDICAL SERVICES

Personnel involving in support of biohazardous waste management must have annual physical examinations by Employee Health. Individuals who suspect or experience biohazardous exposure are entitled to an examination at no expense.
