3. BIOHAZARDOUS SHARPS WASTE INTENDED TO UNDERGO AUTOCLAVING

a. Place contaminated BIOHAZARDOUS sharps (scalpel blades, razor blades, glass or plastic pipettes, broken glass) waste in a rigid impervious (leak resistant\ puncture-proof) plastic container such as a plastic pail with fitted lid or a red or orange biohazardous sharps container.

i. Containers are for one-time use only.

ii. The rigid container must be labeled with the Universal Biohazard Symbol and the word "BIOHAZARD"

iii. The rigid container must be autoclavable at normal autoclave temperatures and have a heat sensitive indicator that proves whether autoclaving was successfully carried out..

iv. Make sure container size enables it to fit into autoclave chamber.

v. If lid is separate, such as those with pails, retain lid aside for use during disposal only; assuring that it is stored in a uncontaminated state..

vi. Empty bleach bottles, with original label removed (and labeled with Universal Biohazard Symbol, the word "BIOHAZARD" and "SHARPS"), can be used for sharps collection at the bench top Affix strips of autoclave tape to bottle sides. Set aside clean bottle top for use after autoclaving. NOTE: After autoclaving, these must go into a larger rigid (heavier gauge) container with lid (such as a pail) for disposal.

b. Do not fill container more than 3/4 full..

c. Autoclave container ONLY. After container has cooled, inspect heat indicator to be sure that contents have been decontaminated.

d. Add absorbent to absorb liquid if required.

e. Check heat sensitive indicator or autoclave tape, and if autoclaved waste has been successfully decontaminated by sterilization, apply lid, in the case of a pail, or replace top, in the case of a bleach bottle., Add absorbent to absorb liquid if required; apply label or write with indelible (unerasable) marker, the word "DECONTAMINATED"

f. If autoclaved waste has NOT been decontaminated follow procedures for disposal of contaminated or infectious biohazardous waste (below).

g. Fill out Biohazardous Waste Form to accompany waste. Retain copy for files.

h. Affix identification label to bag indicating Supervisor, Laboratory or Site of Generation, identification of Contents, Date of Disposal.

i. Transfer entire container to site of biohazardous waste pick-up.

j. Place Waste form in form collection box.

k. Biohazardous Radioactive Waste: Waste containing radioactive compounds must be handled as prescribed by Radiation Safety

l. Biohazardous Waste Containing Hazardous Chemicals (formalin, carcinogens, etc): Waste must be placed in sharps container as prescribed above and handled in compliance with Departmental and College Chemical Hygiene Plan. One must consult with the Departmental or College Chemical Hygiene Committee. Generally speaking, unless contraindicated under unusual circumstances, biohazards are autoclaved before being submitted for chemical waste disposal. However, there are distinct exceptions: Do not autoclave biohazards containing even a trace of solvents, volatile or corrosive chemicals (phenol, formalin, ether, chloroform, TCA, etc. Tissues in 10% buffered formalin are submitted to chemical storage WITHOUT being autoclaved. Procedures for biohazardous sharps chemical waste must be approached on a case by case basis..

m. Recombinant DNA: Procedures must be based on the classification risks of components used. If any component is biohazardous, then the waste so generated must be classified as biohazardous
