The Howard University College of Medicine Learning Resources Center (LRC) is a computing facility located in the Seeley G. Mudd building whose intended purpose is to support the computing and multimedia activities related to the academic curriculum of medical education.

The facility is managed by the Division of Informatics in collaboration with the Office of Medical Education. Supervision of LRC personnel and student monitors is the responsibility of the Director of the Division of Informatics. Request for systems software, productivity software, and utility software is to be directed to the Division of Informatics. Request for educational software is to be made to the Office of Medical Education. Scheduling of special functions is also handled by the Office of Medical Education.

Prioritized Use of Resources

When the demand for computing resources exceeds available capacity, priorities for the use will be established and enforced. Authorized faculty and staff may set and alter priorities for use of the resources. The priorities for use are:

Highest: Uses that directly support the educational, research and service missions of the College.

Medium: Other uses that indirectly benefit the education, research and service missions of the College, as well as and including reasonable and limited personal communications.

Lowest: Uses that do not directly or indirectly benefit the education, research, and service missions of the College; All recreational uses.

Forbidden: Installing computer games; playing computer games; all activities in violation of the University and College handbooks or local and federal laws; installation of unauthorized software; installation of software without written permission of the Division of Informatics, Office of the Dean, or the Office of Information Systems and Services; use in a obscene, harassing or otherwise improper manner; use of another’s computer account or allowing another person to use his or her account; leaving a computer workstation for an extended period of time without logging out; unauthorized access to computing accounts or systems inside of or outside of the University’s systems.

The College may enforce these priorities by restricting or limiting usages of lower priority in circumstances where their demand and limitations of capacity impact or threaten to impact usages of higher priority.

The hour of operation during the fall and spring semesters are Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M. till 9:00 P.M. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00 Noon till 9:00 P.M.

VI The HUCM Domain

A Domain is a collection of network resources accessible to those users which are members of the Domain. When you log on to one of the computers in the LRC, you are requested to enter a Domain Name. This Domain Name should be "HUCM" in order to access the resources of the HUCM Domain. This gives you access to the file server, NPGADAMS; the printer, LRCPrinter.

VII User Name and Temporary Password Assignments

NOTE: ALWAYS REMEMBER TO LOG OFF WHEN YOU FINISH WITH A WORKSTATION. REMEMBER THAT ALL ACTIVITY AGAINST YOUR ACCOUNT IS MONITORED. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL ACTIVITY CHARGED AGAINST YOUR ACCOUNT. ABUSE OF YOUR ACCOUNT MAY CAUSE REVOCATION OF YOUR PRIVILEGE TO USE HUCM COMPUTING RESOURCES.

The LRC uses the Microsoft Windows NT operating system on both its workstations and servers. Before you can use the systems, you must obtain a user name and password. Before receiving your User Name and temporary password and the subsequent activation of your account, you must complete, sign, and submit policy statement regarding "Installation of Software on Computers Provided by the College of Medicine." Once this form is turned in, your account will be activated within 48 hours or less. You can obtain the form from the Division of Informatics, Room 1301, Numa PG Adams Building, College of Medicine. Also return to complete form to the Division of Informatics.

The University will also provide you with a user name and password to access resources in the "ENTERPRISE" Domain. You can change the temporary password HUCM assigns to the same one used for Enterprise. Doing so will synchronize the two and allow intergration of the two domains.

If your user name provided by HUCM HUCM Domain is different than the one provided by HU Enterprise domain, notify the Division of Informatics so that we can adjust your user name to match that of the HU Enterprise domain.

In general, your user name is the first letter of your first name, followed by your last name. For example, John Smith’s user name would be jsmith.

1. Your temporary password is dependent on what information you supply on the policy statement. If you give us you ssn, then it is your password (without the dashes(-). If you give your student ID number, it is the first letter of your first name followed by the first letter of your last name followed by your Howard University student ID number. For example, if John Smith’s student ID number is 01997451, then his password is js01997451. This is a temporary password. Please change it as soon as is convenient for security reasons.

2. Special exceptions will occur if there are two or more students whose user name would be the same because the first initial of the first name and the last name are the same. In this case we will add a number after the user name. For example JoAnn K. Smith and John E. Smith would use jsmith and jsmith2 as user names respectively.

3. If you have a problem with logging on, please see the Informatics personnel in suite 1301 of the Numa PG Adams building.

X Use of Printing Resources

The printing resources in the LRC are to be used for medical education related printing only.

All printing is monitored and a users privileges may be revoked if excessive printing not related to medical education is done using your account.

It is mportant that you logoff after you finish using a workstation. This will prevent others from printing and charging your account.

In order to recover the cost of printing, HUCM is currently in the process of installing a "PRINT CARD SYSTEM." The system is comprised of a PRINT STATION and a CARD READER. When the user prints a job, the job goes into a PRINT QUEUE at the PRINT STATION. The user then goes to the PRINT STATION, swipes his or her card, selects the job to be printed, and executes print.

Each user of the LRC will be provided a card with value added which will allow for printing a preset number of pages each semester. Once the value on the card is expended, the user will need to purchase additional value for the card in order to be able to print dditional pages. Look for the system to be installed about September, 1999. The cost of the print card will be used for the purchase of printing supplies (paper and toner), as well as maintenance on the printers. Further details will be made available when the system is installed.

XI Printers in the LRC

There are two (2) high volume printers in the LRC. Each printer is identified by a network name.

NOTE: Adding Paper

If it becomes necessary for you to add paper, please use special care in opening the paper trays. They are switch-controlled and DO NOT pull straight out. To open the drawer, first squeeze up of the drawer release lever, then wait for the paper tray to lower (about 5 seconds) then pull the drawer open. We have a number of drawers damaged due to improper procedures when opening the paper drawers. Please seek assistance it you are not familiar with using this printer.

LRCPrinter: XEROX DocuPrint N4525

This is our newest printer. It prints at 40 pages/min and can waste paper faster than you can imagine. Please be certain to review you materials on screen before sending to this printer. If at all possible, use the features of your application to select double-sided printing (duplexing). This will save paper as well as trees. It cost between $0.12 and $0.16 per page to print. Be cognizant of this fact as you print. USE THE SCREEN TO PROOF WORK BEFORE PRINTING.

XII CD-ROM Servers (No Longer in use)

The LRC has three (3) CD-ROM Server which gives us the capacity of 54 CDs online at any given time. These CDs contain programs, images, and multimedia presentations for your use. Consult the course coordinator for titles being used in a particular course.

The names of the CD-ROM servers are, CALLIS, MARTIN, and MURRAY. They are mapped when you log on to the HUCM Domain. Use MY COMPUTER to view the contents of the CD-ROM Servers.

If you have a title you would like mounted, see the Office of Medical Education to make arrangements for "mounting."
