EXPENSES

PERSONAL EXPENSES

As a student living on your own, you will need to purchase your own toiletries and clothes. You will be expected to be clean and professional in appearance at all times. Laundering and dry cleaning of apparel is essential. Recreation activities are another expected personal expense. We estimate that these personal expenses may average about $250 to $275 per month. Even if your parents cannot provide money on a regular basis, you may wish to ask them for some personal items, such as a new coat or suit, when these become necessary. You may also wish to ask them occasionally for some money for recreational and other personal expenses.

OUT OF TOWN TRAVEL

Amounts required for travel to and from Washington, as well as for electives and residency interviews, vary so tremendously that it is impossible to make any general statements about average travel expenses. Moreover, this is another area where we expect the students and their families to assume primary responsibility.

EMERGENCY ASSISTANCE

At some time during the year, you may incur unexpected expenses. It may be an illness at home, or it may be an uninsured loss of property. For students with no other sources of funds, the College of Medicine has an emergency loan program. Students may also borrow from this program for living expenses while awaiting other student aid. Application forms are available in the College of Medicine's Financial Aid Office.
