We work hard, but we also believe in celebrating together. The Department has three major activities each year:
1. Research Day--held in May. The day starts with a continental breakfast, followed by a short research presentations by the students (mostly) and the faculty (occasionally). A buffet lunch is provided, and at some point during the day there is an address by an invited speaker, usually someone from outside the Howard community, and sometimes by one of our alumni. Everyone receives a memento of the day, such as a T-shirt or a mug with the Departmental logo. The photo below shows some students wearing their T-shirts at a recent Research Day.
2. Picnic--held in September. This event welcomes the students, and is held in a park in the middle of DC or at a more remote location in the country. There is a cook-out, and the Annual Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Croquet Tournament brings out the competitive spirit, and there is also an informal baseball game.
Here we are at a recent picnic!
3. End-of-the-year party--held in December. This party showcases the culinary skills of the Department. The party rotates from year to year among homes in different parts of the Metropolitan Area. In 1998 it was held on a cruise ship on the Potomac. Dancing and party games allow us all to unwind.
During the year there are other smaller events, such as the Welcoming Reception prior to the start of the Fall semester.
Come visit us! We're on the Main Campus of Howard University in the Numa P.G. Adams Building, Room 3430.
