UROGENITAL
SYSTEM
Dr. J. H. Baker
OBJECTIVES:
Using the cadaver and this syllabus, the
student should be able to:
- Visualize the location of the
kidneys and their relationships to other structures.
- Describe the anatomy and the
location of the ureters.
- Describe the anatomical features of
the bladder.
- Describe the blood supply,
innervation, and functions of the organs of the urinary
system.
- Describe the development of the
kidneys and ureter.
- Identify anatomical components of
the male and female reproductive system and understand
their location within the body.
- Describe the basic functions of each
organ relative to reproductive and endocrine activity.
- Discuss the anatomical pathways in
both sexes that a gamete must travel from the site of
production to the site of fertilization.
- Understand the basic way in which
both male and female reproductive systems develop.
OUTLINE:
I. Kidneys
- Location. The kidneys are in the
upper part of the posterior portion of the abdomen
opposite the 12th thoracic and the first three
lumbar vertebrae. Due to the presence of the liver the
right kidney is a little lower than the left.

2. Ascent
B. Relationships
- Right kidney
a. superior diaphragm, liver
and adrenal glands
b.inferior colon
c. anterior liver on the upper
part, the colon on the lower part, and a part of the duodenum
near the hilum
d. posterior the muscles of
the posterior abdominal wall
2. Left kidney. Anterior large
area in contact with the spleen and an area near the hilum in
contact with the pancreas
